Whether you're a first-timer or just need a refresher on the official rules JKJILI uses
Tongits is played by exactly three players using a standard 52-card deck with no Jokers. The dealer receives 13 cards; the other two players each receive 12 cards.
The objective is to be the first player to discard all cards by forming melds — valid sets and runs — and discarding the remaining unmelded cards until your hand is empty. This wins you the round outright.
On each turn, you draw either the top card from the draw pile or the top card from the discard pile. Then you may lay down melds, add cards to existing exposed melds (sagot), and must end your turn by discarding one card.
If after discarding you have no cards left in your hand, you declare "Tongits" and win the round immediately. All other players pay the Tongits winner based on the agreed stake level.
When the draw pile runs out or a player is able to call a draw (when they have no unmelded cards left and are protected), the remaining players' unmelded card values are compared. The player with the lowest total wins and collects from the other two players.
When a player calls a draw, the other players can challenge by laying down their own melds and fighting the call. The player who fights and wins gets a larger payout — but be careful, fighting and losing means a bigger deduction from your stack.
| Card | Point Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ace (A) | 1 point | Lowest value card |
| 2 – 9 | Face value | 2 = 2pts, 9 = 9pts |
| 10, J, Q, K | 10 points each | Highest dead weight |
| Melded cards | 0 points | Do not count against you |
Know your combinations — these are the building blocks of every winning hand at JKJILI
Three cards of the same rank but different suits. This is the most common meld you'll form early in the game. It burns three cards quickly and reduces your hand score.
All four cards of the same rank. Rare and powerful — emptying four cards in one meld dramatically reduces your hand score. A four-of-a-kind is always a solid move when you have it.
Three or more consecutive cards of the same suit. The run can be extended on either end — by you or by opponents doing "sagot" — making it a strategic tool beyond just your own hand.
You can add cards to any meld already exposed on the table — your own or your opponents'. Called "sagot" (which means "answer" in Filipino), this is often the deciding move in tight games.
In some Tongits variants supported at JKJILI, a player can choose to keep melds hidden (face-down) to avoid giving opponents information. These are revealed only at draw or Tongits declaration.
The ultimate winning move — discarding your last card after fully melding your hand. A Tongits win earns you the pot from both opponents immediately, no comparison needed.
JKJILI Manila Bay gaming — Pahiyas Festival colours, night vibes
There's a reason Tongits has survived and thrived in Filipino gaming culture for decades. Unlike casino games that require learning complex rules or memorising strategy charts, Tongits is accessible. Anyone who grew up in a Filipino household has probably watched relatives play it — during Christmas gatherings, barrio fiestas, or lazy Sunday afternoons. The rules are passed down through families, the strategies are learned through experience, and the social element makes it feel less like gambling and more like a community activity.
When JKJILI decided to build a Tongits platform for Filipino players, the priority was authenticity. The rules implemented at JKJILI follow the standard Filipino Tongits format that most players know — the same draw mechanics, the same sagot rules, the same draw-calling system, and the same Tongits declaration that earns you an outright win. Nothing has been changed to suit a foreign audience or simplified to the point where it loses what makes the game feel like Tongits.
Most Tongits sessions in the Philippines happen informally — on the floor, on a folding table, on a balcony with plastic chairs. The game has always been portable in spirit, and JKJILI's mobile platform carries that energy forward. The interface adapts cleanly to any phone screen size without requiring any app download. Open your browser, log in to your JKJILI account, and you're in the Tongits lobby in under a minute.
Cards are clearly displayed with suit colours easy to distinguish even on smaller screens. The meld zone, discard pile, draw pile, and opponent card counts are all visible without cluttering the screen. The turn timer gives you enough time to think without slowing the pace down for other players. And when you win a round, the payout calculation appears immediately so you always know exactly what you earned and why.
All Tongits sessions and financial transactions at JKJILI use end-to-end encryption. Your personal information is never shared with third parties without your consent. Read our full Privacy Policy for details.
JKJILI offers two main formats for Tongits: cash tables and tournaments. At cash tables, you buy in with real money from your JKJILI wallet, and every round result directly adds to or subtracts from your balance. Cash tables are available at various stake levels — from ₱100 minimum buy-ins for casual players up to high-stakes tables for experienced players who want bigger action per round.
Tournaments are a different proposition. You pay a fixed entry fee, receive a set number of tournament chips, and compete across multiple rounds against a bracket of players. The prize pool accumulates from all entry fees and is distributed among the top finishers. JKJILI runs daily Tongits tournaments and weekly events with larger prize pools. The weekly championships regularly offer total prizes exceeding ₱500,000 — distributed among the top 50 or more finishers depending on the event format.
For players who prefer the structure and upside of tournaments, JKJILI's events are a great way to maximise your potential return from a fixed investment. For players who want to grind consistently and control their own pace, the cash tables offer that flexibility. Many JKJILI regulars use both — cash tables during the week and tournaments on weekends when the prize pools are largest.
One of the biggest reasons Filipino players trust JKJILI for their Tongits sessions is the payment experience. Depositing via GCash takes about 60 seconds — enter your GCash number, approve the transfer in the GCash app, and your JKJILI wallet is topped up instantly. Maya works the same way. For those who prefer traditional banking, BDO, BPI, and UnionBank online transfers are all supported, and JKJILI processes incoming transfers promptly.
Withdrawals are handled with the same efficiency. Once you request a payout, GCash and Maya withdrawals typically complete within 15 to 30 minutes regardless of the time of day. There are no arbitrary weekly withdrawal caps on standard accounts, and JKJILI does not impose surprise fees on your winnings. What you earn at the Tongits table is what lands in your wallet — minus any applicable bonus wagering requirements, which are always clearly stated before you claim any promotion.
Level up your game with these practical tips from experienced Tongits players
Face cards (10, J, Q, K) are worth 10 points each — they're the heaviest deadweight in your unmelded hand. Focus on forming melds that include these cards early, or discard them quickly if no meld opportunity exists.
The discard pile tells you what cards opponents are holding or need. If you see an opponent avoid picking up a card you'd think they'd want, they might already have that rank melded. Use this information to decide what's safe to discard.
Adding to an opponent's meld (sagot) reduces your hand but gives them no advantage — they've already laid down those cards. Sagot plays are often the smartest move in mid-game when you have isolated cards that would otherwise inflate your draw score.
If you've melded enough to have a low unmelded total and the draw pile is running low, consider calling a draw before an opponent reaches Tongits. A well-timed draw call at JKJILI tables can win you a pot you'd otherwise lose.
When an opponent calls a draw, you can fight it if you believe your melded count makes you competitive. Calculate your unmelded card value before deciding to fight. At JKJILI, a successful fight earns you a higher payout, but fighting and losing costs more.
Set a session limit before you start — decide the maximum you're willing to risk in one sitting and stick to it. JKJILI lets you set deposit and session limits in your account settings. Smart bankroll management is what separates consistent winners from one-session players.
